Play Ball

2 days / 1 night

Day 1:

  • With opening day on the horizon, tour the baseball history that MetroWest has to offer! Start your tour up in Marlborough visiting the old ball field where in 1901, Marlborough amateurs beat the Boston Americans (now Red Sox) in a legendary game with Cy Young.  You can read the story at the old ballfield location (across from 27 Prospect Street) in the Museum in the Streets.
  • Then, see the graves of legends John Buckley (1890, Buffalo Bisons), Frank Quinlan (1891, Boston Reds), and Duke Farrell at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Duke Farrell dubbed the “Duke of Marlborough” holds the MLB record for most base-stealers through out in a game (8 in 1897) to this day.
  • Grab dinner at Casey’s Pub where you can see the original Casey Statue from Earnest Thayer’s iconic poem “Casey at the Bat”
  • Spend the night in the sleek Residence Inn Boston Natick and enjoy the comfortable amenities such as the fitness center and complimentary full American breakfast.

Day 2:

  • Take a peek at Babe Ruth’s home at 558 Dutton Road in Sudbury. Babe Ruth bought this home after his disastrous 1922 season.  It’s believed that the “Curse of the Bambino” was only broken after a boy living at the home was hit by a ball at Fenway Park in 2004.
  • Drive by the Harwood & Sons building at 12 Walnut Street in Natick to see the factory where the first baseballs were made. The factory opened in 1958 and produced 360,000 baseballs a year.  Afterwards, head over to the Natick Historical Museum to see memorabilia of Rockford Peaches catcher Dottie Green from the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.  If this name sounds familiar, the movie “A League of Their Own” was based on this.
